Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that practicing mindfulness is good for you. Mindfulness trains the mind just like physical exercise trains the body. It helps increase focus and creativity, reduces stress and anxiety, lowers blood pressure, boosts efficiency. In this post, you’ll read about top 4 reasons why I believe you should add this incredible tool to your life… asap. But first, let me ask you a question. How often do your thoughts wander off to something unrelated while you are listening to a client, colleague, your child or spouse? Do you ever hang up […] Read more »

Ditch your New Year’s resolutions!

resolutions-1143319_1280

When I was younger, I was a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. I would make a list of things I wanted to improve or learn in the New Year. To improve my swimming, take up dancing again, find a new job, see my parents more often… I would make a step or two towards my resolutions in early January, then life would get underway and I would forget about them. My story is not atypical. We all know that New Year’s Resolutions have a very low success rate. In fact, studies show that 88% of people fail to hold on to their […] Read more »

Six Golden Rules for Successful Goal Setting

business-woman-at-office_Cliparto-3643399-Small

How does it feel to be back at work after summer holidays? Are you feeling full of energy and enthusiasm or frustrated about being in the same place and same role? Or are you feeling like… Jean-Paul, a senior executive at a private finance firm, who’s been dreaming of launching his own business for years yet does nothing about it? Or Christine, a manager at a large international company, who’s been waiting to get promoted for years in vain and who keeps postponing making a decision about what to do? Or Veronique, who hops from one job to another every two years, without taking a moment to understand what she really wants and […] Read more »

What is your brand?

IMG_4042

Being an avid networker, I meet new people all the time. For example, in the past few weeks, I met a woman who is looking to change a career direction but is not sure about what would be the best fit for her and how to get there in France. Another woman told me that she felt fed up working for a low salary and is pondering if she should launch her own small business. I also met a manager who had been asking for promotion for the longest time. The fourth person, an expat artist, was struggling to connect with right people in the art world… Those four people had different challenges yet they shared one thing: none of them was clear […] Read more »

LinkedIn got it wrong, or when is your next work anniversary?

LinkedIn is an amazing social media tool if you know how to use it to your advantage, to find dream jobs and clients and to network. I absolutely love it. Yet LinkedIn got one detail wrong. On its home page, it features the box «Ways to Keep in Touch». The one that invites you to «Like» or to comment «Congrats!» to those of your contacts who have just changed jobs and those celebrating their work anniversaries. The problem is that the fastest growing professional social media tool does not distinguish between those who mark the 2nd or 4th anniversary and those who’ve been […] Read more »

On the Power of Story-Telling

Credit:www.complicite.org

Last week during my trip to London, I was reminded of the incredible power of story-telling when I saw was The Encounter by Simon McBurney and his Complicite group. It was a transporting show and the story-telling in its most imaginative form. For days afterwards, I kept on thinking of its multi-dimensional plot set deep in the Amazonian rainforest. That’s what a well-told story does to us: leaves us a little more enlightened, mind-blown, bewildered, reflecting and pondering, and in awe of what we heard. Business leaders and companies understood the power of story-telling long time ago and use it effectively to advance their goals. For instance, some of the ways you can use story-telling as […] Read more »

How To Be A Great Manager

A day after Saint Valentin, the day that celebrates romantic love, I feel inspired to talk about our need to feel supported and nurtured at work. Given that we spend the mind-blowing 23 percent or more of our total lifetime working, it’s only normal that we want a tiny dose of that fuzzy special feeling that we automatically expect from our love relationships. The person best equipped to give us that care and support is of course our boss, or manager. You are a manager, or used to be one, or will manage people at some point of your life. That’s why today I’d like to talk […] Read more »

How to reach your goals in 2016

IMG_1121

Over last month I met quite a few people who told me they were motivated to change their lives or careers this year.  “It’s now or never” said one woman I met.  She was determined to leave her job of 10 years this year before she hit 50. I must have heard this phrase so many times, and especially in January, I couldn’t help asking myself “What will happen if she does not succeed? Will she close the door to her dreams and desire for change?”  In my experience of coaching people, what often happens when we set an ambitious goal and then fail to reach it is that we beat ourselves up hard […] Read more »

On choosing love and courage to act…

Credit: Ariane Dollfus

Five of the attacks last Friday in Paris took place in my old neighborhood, a couple of them meters from my old home. It hit us even closer home when we heard that my son’s friend lost a teacher. Thirty 11 year olds showed up this morning to what was supposed to be their English language class, only to find out that their young teacher was killed among dozens of others… Understandably, I am in deep shock and heartbroken. Like most Parisians. What do we, ordinary citizens, do in face of such incomrehensible in their cruelty acts? What do we do with the anger and heartbreak we feel inside? And with fear? […] Read more »
