Get in the driver’s seat of your career!

(First published in the international women’s business magazine, BusinessOFeminin.) How are you feeling about your current job?  Let me guess. The chances are you are not very satisfied.  If so, you are not alone.  Studies show that up to 75% of employees globally feel unhappy at work. At a time of high unemployment and lacklustre job growth, many employees feel stuck in their jobs and unable to consider a career move even if they are unsatisfied. Employers who want an engaged and productive workforce need to find ways to help employees feel challenged and rewarded by work, for example by […] Read more »

Six Golden Rules for Successful Goal Setting

How does it feel to be back at work after summer holidays? Are you feeling full of energy and enthusiasm or frustrated about being in the same place and same role? Or are you feeling like… Jean-Paul, a senior executive at a private finance firm, who’s been dreaming of launching his own business for years yet does nothing about it? Or Christine, a manager at a large international company, who’s been waiting to get promoted for years in vain and who keeps postponing making a decision about what to do? Or Veronique, who hops from one job to another every two years, without taking a moment to understand what she really wants and […] Read more »

What is your brand?

Being an avid networker, I meet new people all the time. For example, in the past few weeks, I met a woman who is looking to change a career direction but is not sure about what would be the best fit for her and how to get there in France. Another woman told me that she felt fed up working for a low salary and is pondering if she should launch her own small business. I also met a manager who had been asking for promotion for the longest time. The fourth person, an expat artist, was struggling to connect with right people in the art world… Those four people had different challenges yet they shared one thing: none of them was clear […] Read more »

LinkedIn got it wrong, or when is your next work anniversary?

LinkedIn is an amazing social media tool if you know how to use it to your advantage, to find dream jobs and clients and to network. I absolutely love it. Yet LinkedIn got one detail wrong. On its home page, it features the box «Ways to Keep in Touch». The one that invites you to «Like» or to comment «Congrats!» to those of your contacts who have just changed jobs and those celebrating their work anniversaries. The problem is that the fastest growing professional social media tool does not distinguish between those who mark the 2nd or 4th anniversary and those who’ve been […] Read more »

On the Power of Story-Telling

Last week during my trip to London, I was reminded of the incredible power of story-telling when I saw was The Encounter by Simon McBurney and his Complicite group. It was a transporting show and the story-telling in its most imaginative form. For days afterwards, I kept on thinking of its multi-dimensional plot set deep in the Amazonian rainforest. That’s what a well-told story does to us: leaves us a little more enlightened, mind-blown, bewildered, reflecting and pondering, and in awe of what we heard. Business leaders and companies understood the power of story-telling long time ago and use it effectively to advance their goals. For instance, some of the ways you can use story-telling as […] Read more »

How to reach your goals in 2016

Over last month I met quite a few people who told me they were motivated to change their lives or careers this year.  “It’s now or never” said one woman I met.  She was determined to leave her job of 10 years this year before she hit 50. I must have heard this phrase so many times, and especially in January, I couldn’t help asking myself “What will happen if she does not succeed? Will she close the door to her dreams and desire for change?”  In my experience of coaching people, what often happens when we set an ambitious goal and then fail to reach it is that we beat ourselves up hard […] Read more »

7 things you need to do before you quit your job

There is no going around it: the warm and fuzzy feeling of excitement we get when we start a new job inevitably goes away. The work that felt fresh and exciting starts feeling stale, boring and old. That’s when we feel we can no longer stand an obnoxious colleague or a micromanager boss… We notice that the company’s mission has nothing to do with our deepest values… We hate Monday mornings, feel taken for granted, and count days till next vacation… Two things can happen when we hit this point: we either disengage or start looking for a new challenge […] Read more »

Six myths and excuses that keep you stuck in a dead-end job

Burned out. Stressed. Bored. Frustrated. Angry. Resentful. These are the words my clients use to describe their current job situation. Do any of them ring a bell? One of my clients, Marie, 38, was full of regret about the time she spent with a renowned international consultancy firm. “Those years were a total waste,” she says today. Marie knew straightaway that she did not fit in with the company culture. Her views on what’s important in life clashed heavily with the company’s values. Despite that, Marie stayed there for five long years, putting up with a heavy workload and frequent […] Read more »
